Choosing Caravan Heating for Your Camper Van: Why Truma Was My Top Choice
Things are heating up!
It’s getting warm!
Yes, this post is all about caravan heating and I’m clearly on a pun run! Sorry, I can’t help myself!
*takes a deep breath*
Okay, moving on…
With the Culinatour Sprinter van conversion speeding towards a close, we had to choose our heating system.
Having a reliable and easy-to-use caravan heating system is a must, especially if you want to travel during the winters.
Since the market is filled with choices, decision-making can be challenging and confusing.
My friend, Google was not being very helpful so I contacted one of my parents’ friends who also owns a motor home and asked what he was using. He had the Truma Combi installed and was all praise for it.
He’s had it for a few years and was impressed with how easy (and silent!) it was to operate and the fuel consumption was moderate considering how efficiently it heated the home. Not just that, the customer service was excellent which makes it a real winner in my books.
I’d heard about Truma, of course, since they are the market leaders in the European market and have been in the industry since 1961.
They’ve won multiple awards, including FIVE most recently in 2018!
Pretty impressive, right?!
But I was curious to see how it would stack up against the competition.
Will it tick all the boxes on my fairly exhaustive criteria checklist?
Why Truma is My ONLY Choice for Caravan Heating Systems
That’s a pretty bold announcement but once you finish reading this post, you’ll be nodding your head in agreement.
These were the criteria I checked heating systems for when choosing one for the Culinatour Sprinter Van and the Truma topped all of them. You’ll find out why in just a minute…
A Silent Performer
I didn’t want a noisy, roaring RV furnace.
I like my sleep, thank you very much. Moreover, a noisy heater would ruin any chance we’d have to help our little daughter sleep well through the night. So, this was huge for me.
The Truma Combi is as stealthy and silent as a hungry tiger on the prowl.
You wouldn’t even know it’s on unless you wave your hand in front of the vent. Yeah. That’s what I love so much!
Compact and Stylish to Boot
I don’t know about you, but I sure didn’t want large, heavy heating units to weigh down our Sprinter van. Also, I wanted a unit that would heat both, water and air.
Luckily, the Truma Combi does exactly that. It’s one compact unit for two powerful functions.
That makes me a very happy camper, indeed!!
Plus, take a look at the units… See how sleek and stylish they are. I know this may seem silly but I love it when everything in my home is beautiful to look at while being functional too!
Energy-Efficient Ease of Mind
Let’s get to the important bit now… Money matters!
Fact: Travelling in a Sprinter van is adventurous, fun and… expensive!
Especially, if you like your hot water baths, washing dishes in hot water after a big cook and sleeping with the heat on.
If you use caravan heating that runs only on diesel or gas, the fuel expenses can quickly burn up your budget!
The Truma Combi E, on the other hand, runs on BOTH gas and electricity. YES!!
So, when you’re at a campground, you can easily hook up the heating to a power socket at the site and save BIG.
Not just that, the Truma Combi has the option to add on a Truma CP Plus which is a programmable thermostat so you can easily set it and forget it!
You can also use the Truma App and control your heating and keep track of your gas supply from your smartphone by installing the Truma iNet system!
Customer Service Par Excellence
Finally, what sold me completely on the Truma was the excellent customer service.
My parents’ friend endorsed them wholeheartedly.
A quick look at some of their country-specific Facebook pages showed me he wasn’t the only one!
Take a look at some of the reviews… AMAZING!
All of this to say that there was no doubt in my mind that we’ll go with the Truma for our Sprinter van too.
I chatted with Jack Richens, who’s working on our Sprinter van conversion, and while he’d heard a lot about the brilliance of Truma, he’d never installed one.
Knowing about Truma’s reputation for great customer service, I contacted the UK branch to find out if they could provide technical help to Jack.
I think they fell in love with Jack’s van projects on his website and were more than happy to help us install the Truma system.
So, ladies and gentlemen, the Culinatour Sprinter Van will have a fancy Truma Combi heating system to keep us warm and cosy on our road trips and adventures!
You can find out more about Truma right here on their website or feel free to ask me questions and I’ll be happy to answer them to the best of my ability.
