The Sprinter Van Conversion Journey: How to Choose an Expert and Why Jack Richens Was Our Choice
I’M SO EXCITED!!
Sorry, for all the shouting but I’m just SO excited!
Our Sprinter van conversion journey just got REAL.
My husband and I just got back after dropping off our Mercedes Sprinter Van at Jack Richens’ workshop and I’m bursting to give you all the details!
We drove all the way to England and it was the perfect adventure.
While the full tour of our Sprinter van home will have to wait for another 3 months, I can give you a sneak peek at what’s lined up.
For this post, I want to pick up from where we left off in my initial post about working with Jack Richens, the rockstar Sprinter van conversion expert.
I’ve already shared that I’m a HUGE fan of Jack’s passion and entrepreneurial spirit. Jack is incredibly passionate about his work.
Before he moved his workshop into a converted barn, he tried juggling his full-time job, as a broadcast engineer in London, and family time with his passion; building vans for his growing customer base.
He soon realised that things needed to change, so he decided to quit his day job and move to building vans full time. A very wise decision, in my opinion!
He’s already extended the workshop space to accommodate all the tools and equipment he’d require to convert the vans.
Also, he’s thinking about more enhancements to make the workshop future proof.
Over the last few years, Jack’s business – This Moving House has moved from a mere hobby project to a serious venture, and Jack’s still fired up about building beautiful camper vans, just as he was when he first started out.
This post is packed with literally everything you need to know so you can make the perfect decision about hiring an expert for converting your van into a home on the road!
Yes, my friend… prepare to take notes.
The 5 Most Important Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Sprinter Van Conversion Expert
Sprinter van conversion can be expensive, time-consuming and challenging. It may get you to question the whole road trip, outdoor adventure lifestyle.
That is why it’s so important for you to make the right choice when hiring a van conversion expert. You don’t want to waste money or time.
This post picks up from my earlier post where I shared why we chose to work with Jack Richens and shared the 5 must-ask questions when hiring an expert.
1. Be Prepared with Your Ideas…
Jack and I spent almost 2 hours in person after exchanging hundreds of emails and a ton of calls to discuss my ideas and vision for the Culinatour van.
So, yes, know what you want and how you want your van to feel and look like.
After all, you’ll be spending long hours and many days (and weeks!) in it.
Your comfort and your travel personality are of great importance.
2. But Also Be Prepared to Listen
While knowing what you want is super important, it is also important to listen to your van conversion expert.
As I shared in my earlier post, I decided to work with Jack because of his track record and his personal commitment to creating the most innovative and yet comfortable Sprinter vans.
However, when I met him, I realized there’s SO much more Jack brings to the table. And, while my ideas are important, listening to his ideas and thoughts is even more important.
3. Embrace Innovation and Improvements
Fact: What’s great now will be outdated in a few years.
That is why when you’re hiring a van conversion expert, you want to choose someone who has the heart and the talent to innovate and improve.
They should be willing to push the envelope in terms of design and yet keep it practical.
Jack’s van designs are amazing and they keep getting better and better because he keeps improving them.
He is open to feedback and loves inventing new ways of handling things in a camper van.
For instance, he invented a very clever mechanism to keep the kitchen drawers shut while driving. SO practical!
Further, the kitchen unit inside the van now includes an extractable shelf for supplies and spices.
The shelf is completely invisible when it’s closed as it disappears inside the kitchen unit.
Nothing seems impossible for Jack. He really likes being confronted with a set of challenges.
The biggest challenge we’ve set him is – to cook and enjoy great food outdoors with a kitchen unit that is attached to the rear of the Culinatour van.
I can’t wait to see how he tackles this challenge! Stay tuned!
4. Attention to Details is Everything
When hiring a Sprinter van conversion expert, do have quite a few chats with them and if possible, check out their finished work to see whether they have an eye for detailing and clever design.
Since a caravan home is so compact, detailing makes all the difference.
The reason I was so confident about working with Jack was; he has designed and crafted all of his van conversions beautifully and with perfection.
Jack really cares about the little details and makes sure that everything in the van is practical and pretty at the same time.
Every inch of storage space in the van, he factors into the tailored design. Jack goes the extra mile to create the perfect camper van for his customers.
Yes, the little things make a huge difference to the look and feel of a converted van.
For instance, do the drawers have invisible locks and are secure? Does the color of the kitchen tiles match the overall color scheme? How are the wooden surfaces treated and installed? Where is the portable toilet located and how accessible it is? And so on.
5. The Single Most Important Thing
While all of the above are super-duper important when hiring a Sprinter van conversion expert, the ONE thing that should be absolutely non-negotiable for you is… Customer Focus.
That is why you need to do a fair bit of research (unless of course, you choose Jack!) when looking for someone to convert your Sprinter van into the perfect camper van for your family.
To give you an idea of Jack’s commitment to customer delight…
He was finishing another van build when we came over to drop off the Sprinter Van at his workshop in Oxford, UK.
This was the perfect opportunity to have a sneak peek at an almost finished van.
It was very impressive to see how Jack puts his customers’ requirements and preferences at the centre of everything he does.
Every van build is unique! Of course, there is a base design which is the one that went viral about 1.5 years ago. But that is just the starting point for every new van project.
The van we looked at was being customised for someone who loves skiing.
And now, Jack will be customising the Culinatour Van so one can savor culinary delights while traveling outdoors.
Can you see how a commitment to customer delight blends innovation, attention to detail, and so much more?
There you go, friends.
